does barack obama want to be president? he looked like he'd rather have his toenails removed with a dull, rusty blade than on that stage that last night? >> does he wants to support education? he says he won't cut education. that is different from congressman paul ryan's budget, who is the guy that you conservatives champion as the truth teller for your party. the list goes on and on for taxes as well. so the guy you're saying who showed up yesterday, if the scorecard is correct, is as far from a conservative, a re masum you can put on the table. if you were honest, that's not the guy you would vote for, maybe someone in the middle, a moderate republican. but you a staunch conservative would not vote for mitt romney, the one na showed up last night? >> well, one of the things -- your question, of course, answers why i've done what i did the last five years trying to stop him from being the nominee, but he did effective things defending conservative values last night. if you look at one focus groups one of the networks did o

i was surprised that obama didn't bring it up. biggest surprise for me of the night is that it didn't come up. it's been the dominant thing in our debate for the last few weeks. >> david axelrod is coming up. jon meacham, you look over the past 25 years, 30 years or so, and you look at the republican presidential candidates who all have strengths, they've all been remarkable men in their own way, but not good debaters. you know, republicans have held our breath through the john mccain debates and the george w. bush debates and the bob dole debates and the george h.w. debates. again, a great man, a horrific debater. you know, the famous jon lovitz line, "i can't believe i'm losing to this guy." playing michael dukakis. you really do have to go back to ronald reagan to find a republican that was in command during a presidential debate. and i predict that's going to excite the republican base in a way it hasn't been excited in a very long time. we're not used to winning debates like this. >> right. >> i'd even -- i think you're exact

obviously the big story this week is the first obama-romney debate. i'm very excited about this, because these are two guys who i wouldn't say are great debaters. >> right. >> i think they both have strengths and very pointed weaknesses. >> i've been calling the first debate romney game changer version 3.0. >> yes. he's going to purpose it around this week. >> yes. first it was you'll get a running mate and you'll see this race get shaken up. at the convention, he's going to give a speech like nobody's ever seen before. now it's like the first debate. seriously, guys, quit laughing. >> they've been waiting for the moment, this is it. >> it's always interesting to watch both sides kind of play with the expectations here. my favorite piece of news is romney is practicing zingers. >> i can't believe they let that leak. >> humor is one of his strong suits. >> i remember back in the 1980's when he did improv and he was fantastic. he did bird calls and great christopher walkin impression. >> that's right. >> why why why would you leak that mitt romney its r

in virginia, a key swing state, president obama a week ago was leading by 19%. in ohio he is leading by women by considerable numbers. it is that constituency which is so critical. did you hear the woman, the word "woman" used at all during the debate last night? that was a measure not only of president obama's this engagement, but mitt romney not wanting to bring in up, and jim lehrer, i don't know what was going on. . host: laura is a republican. hi, laura, you are on. caller: i wanted to say to katrina, if you want to talk about common sense policies, maybe you need to listen to rush limbaugh and maybe you need to really listen to what mr. romney said about this economy. if you are concerned about poverty, do you know that the number one group tracked in poverty is single thing all households -- single female soul? you need to look at stuff that the conservatives are saying because they care about the portrait they don't want people trapped in poverty. they know what small businesses, which employs 60-70% of the citizens and in this country, taxed more. if yo

one of them we have moved into the obama category. but we have polled in all of them over the last couple of weeks. the president has leads ranging anywhere from two to eight points. but what was interesting, we asked a few other questions. including job approval rating, romney favorability, and who wins on the economy. in three states, the president had a job approval rating of 49 or above. romney's unfavorable rating was higher than his favorable rating, and the president led romney on the economy. in three of those stays, iowa, ohio, new hampshire. just one state did you have the president's job approval rating 48% or over and romney winning on the issue of the economy. that's north carolina. if you look at it that way and go to the map to 270, what does that mean, and you put those four states into the respective categories, and look at. this the president for suur sho. romney a long way to go has to sweep the rest. there are five left in the background. florida, virginia, wisconsin, colorado, nevada. this is where if romney does
